Landfill should not be expanded

Text Size: AaAaAaAaAa

It seems that our county board members have forgotten who voted them into office. They choose to ignore the wishes of their constituents and seem to be favoring landfill expansion, even though it more than doubles the size of the existing landfill, from 102 acres of present landfill to 123 more acres.

The reason the county board gives for this expansion is that the cost of garbage pickup will go up for everyone in the county if it is not allowed. Waste Management (the largest waste hauler in the country) does not use the Morris landfill, they haul to Joliet or Wilmington. Morris is one of the few communities in Grundy County that does not use Waste Management. The cost issue will affect only a handful of Grundy County residents.

As for the residents of Morris not having to pay for garbage pickup, as we have been lead to believe, there is a tax levy on record that states Morris receives, from tax dollars of its residents, $324,000 a year for garbage.

The county board members responsibility and obligation is to the residents of Grundy County, not to a private entity whose owner(s) do not even live in Grundy County.

Please call your board members and tell them “no” to expansion.

MLB preview: Kansas City Royals

The Royals have enough young talent to make them the team most likely to stop the Tigers from ruling the AL Central for the next few years. But they're a year, or more, away.

MLB preview: Detroit Tigers

Even with Prince Fielder, Detroit may have only the sixth-best roster in the American League in my book (maybe the seventh if the Blue Jays really put it together). In the Central, that is plenty to be the favorite.
