Mickelson wins tournament, Woods the FedEx Cup

Even during a season when he didn't win a single major, Tiger Woods gets to be champion of the golf world.

Woods won the FedEx Cup Sunday by placing second to Phil Mickelson at the Tour Championship. It was the third time he'd finished second in a tournament in 2009, and he's got six victories. That's enough to offset a season in which Woods didn't win a single major, which is the first time he's done that since 2004, for Woods. He said he was "proud" of his effort this season, especially given he was coming off of knee surgery and not 100 percent for much of it.

It hasn't been such a successful season for Mickelson, who's been more concerned about his family members' battle with breast cancer than he has with golf. This weekend's win was the first since his wife and mother were diagnosed with the disease. How could you not root for him Sunday, as he put on a masterful performance, shooting a 5-under-par 65 to pull away from the field? Even if Mickelson had not been in my fantasy golf lineup, I'm sure I'd have pulled for him to win after the year he's been through.

Kenny Perry, unlike Mickelson, had a very real shot to win the FedEx Cup in addition to the tournament heading into Sunday. Less than 24 hours after he'd said Woods had better bring his "A game" if he hoped to win, Perry brought his F game, shooting a 4-over 74. He finished all the way in a tie for fourth place with Padraig Harrington.
