Police: Intoxicated driver disobeys stop sign, drives into ditch

A DRIVER who went through the intersection of Rice and Campus roads at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, was charged with DUI.

John Cizmar, 53, 1803 Grinter Road, Mazon, was also charged with disobeying a stop sign, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and not having proof of insurance. He posted $100 and his driver's license and was given a Nov. 16 court date.

A passenger in the car, Robert Stifter, 49, Joliet, was charged with felony obstructing after he gave a false name, knowing there was a warrant for his arrest. He was wanted in Will County on a charge of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, and bond was set at $15,000 cash.

Deputy R. H. Coleman reported several witnesses said Cizmar was westbound on Rice Road, when he failed to stop at the T intersection with Campus Road. The Cadillac he was driving went through the intersection and into the ditch.

Deputy Coleman reported Cizmar smelled of liquor, appeared intoxicated and failed the field sobriety tests.

While talking to Cizmar, the deputy reported he saw Stifter cross the ditch and walk towards a cornfield. Deputy Coleman reported Stifter refused to stop, but he caught him in the field. Stifter then admitted he had given a false name and was wanted in Will County.

Both were taken to the county jail, where Cizmar refused to take the Breathalyzer test.

Bond was set at $500 cash for Stifter when he appeared in court. He was given a Dec. 3 court date.
