Large amount of marijuana found in Interstate 80 bust

Two California men remain in the Grundy County Jail after they were arrested Friday, Oct. 23 on a class X drug charge by Illinois State Police.

Anthony Northrup, 26, Weaverville, Calif., and Jorge Betancourt-Mendoza, 19, Santa Ana, Calif., are charged with possession of more than 5,000 grams of marijuana and possession of more than 5,000 grams of marijuana with intent to deliver.

They were arrested about 1 p.m. Friday on Interstate 80 by Illinois State Police, after the large amount of marijuana was found in the vehicle.

Bond for Northrup was set at $25,000 cash and at $22,500 cash for Betancourt-Mendoza. Public Defender J. D. Flood was appointed to represent Betancourt-Mendoza.
