Two books can teach key lessons to us all
Over the past several years, I have recommended books which I felt were important. Recently, I came across two which have a powerful theme about individuals that truly made a difference in the world.
First, a mountain climber that failed in his lifelong dream to climb K-2, the world’s second highest mountain. Yet, learning from his mistakes and failures, he discovered that education in the underdeveloped world was more important than his personal goals.
The book, “Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortenson is the story of a man who built schools throughout Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Second, is the story of an ordinary man who became a doctor and found his life’s calling in curing infectious diseases and bring modern medicine to the poorest part of the world.
The book: “Mountains beyond Mountains” by Tracy Kidder is the quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a man who would cure the world.
These are two stories of men who overcame real hardships and by their own personalities made a difference. It is a lesson to us all.
In the words of Margaret Mead: “Never underestimate the ability of a small group of people to change the world. Indeed, they are the only ones who ever have.”
I have provided extra copies you can get at the Morris Public Library. Get inspired.
