COAL CITY — Mrs. Wilma J. Martin, 80, of Coal City, passed away Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at Morris Hospital.

Born July 23, 1929 in Coal City, Wilma was a daughter of the late William and Marie (Swartz) Carnegie. She was raised and educated in Coal City and graduated from Coal City High School with the class of 1947.

Wilma married Joseph Martin on May 7, 1949, at Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City. Together, they lived their entire married lives in Coal City.

She was worked on several construction projects as a payroll clerk, prior to gaining employment with Commonwealth Edison, from where she retired in 1990. Wilma truly loved her family and cherished the time spent with them, as well as her friends.

Survivors include three children, Walter Martin of Wilmington,  William (Lynn) Martin and Susan (Larry) Tarman, both of Coal City; six grandchildren, Matthew (Stephanie) Tarman of Topeka, Kansas, Aimee’ (Dan) Meister of Texas City, Texas, and Luke Tarman, Kailee Martin, Jarrod Olson and Taylor Olson, all of Coal City; four great-grandchildren, Joshua Wright, Tyler Tarman, Caleb Tarman and Aidan Meister; and several nieces and nephews, including her special niece, Cyndy (Jim Paputsa) Sampson.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph; one sister, Patricia Sampson; two brothers, John (Rose) Carnegie and William (Carol) Carnegie; a grandson, Joshua; and one nephew, Curt Sampson.

Visitation and video tribute was held Sunday Feb. 7, at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 North Broadway (one block north of Illinois 113) in Coal City.

Funeral services followed at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 8 at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, 245 South Kankakee St., in Coal City, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Reverend Robert Noesen will officiate.

Burial will be at Braceville-Gardner Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Matthew Tarman, Luke Tarman, Taylor Olson, Jarrod Olson, Terry Sisk, Scott Pavlis and Leo Reeves. Honorary pallbearers will be Aimee’ Meister and Kailee Martin.

Preferred memorials in lieu of flowers may be made as gifts in Wilma’s memory to Assumption Catholic Church or the Coal City Fireman’s Association.
