Edna R. Torkelson-Smith

CHANNAHON — Mrs. Edna R. Torkelson-Smith, 90, of Channahon passed away peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, surrounded by her family at Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center.

Born in Chicago, Edna was the daughter of the late Edward and Bernice (Frederick) Necker-Brooks.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Aileen E. (Torkelson) (John) Cotter of Channahon and her son, Lawrence A. Torkelson, of Marshall, Texas, and son-in-law H.D. (the late Patricia J.) Stephenson. She was the proud grandmother of Brenda E. (Rick) VanAsdlen, Marsha A. Simotes, Sherry L. Stephenson, Jeffery B. Stephenson, Craig E. Stephenson, Rebecca S. Stephenson, Lauri L. (John) McKendry, Douglas L. Todd, Andrew R. Torkelson and Dusti M. Torkelson; the loving great-grandmother of Jessica, Jonathan, Nicholas, Alex, Jenna, Bryce, Evangeline, Sarina, Arick, Megan, Alicia, Caitlin, Jordan, Lauren, Madison, Mari, Tanner and Lilly; the dear sister of Arlene (Jack) Hawkins; and special aunt of Jack (Lee) Hawkins Jr. of Colorado, Beth (David) Hawkins of Canada and Mark Hawkins of Channahon. Also left to cherish her memory are her beloved step-children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Stanley Torkelson; second husband, Bernard Smith; and her daughters, Jacki Flatness and Patricia J. Stephenson.

She was a long-time member of United Methodist Church in Channahon. She was also a Goldeneers Member, an avid card player and an enthusiastic "bingoist."

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Laurie-Unland-Smith for her compassionate care for Edna.

Edna will be lying in state from 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010 until when services begin at 11 a.m. at the Channahon United Methodist Church, 24751 W. Eames (U.S. 6). Pastor Gavin Brandt and Pastor Mary Zajac will officiate.

Interment will be at Willard Grove Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at The Maple Funeral Home and Crematorium, 24300 W. Ford Road, Channahon.
