Pam’s Academy of Dance will award $500 in lesson scholarships this summer.

Academy director and owner Pam Simpson feels it’s important to instill an appreciation for the art of dance, and create a positive atmosphere in which students can grow and learn.

She feels this is as true now as it was in 1993, when she opened the doors to her first academy.

To that end, the academy will once again award five $100 scholarships for the 2010 summer session.

Last year, scholarships were awarded to 10 dancers from both the Morris and Channahon areas.

Just like last year, the scholarships will be awarded based on an essay contest and features categories for students ranging in age from 3 years old to adults.

To apply for a scholarship, all that is needed is a love for dance and the ability to express that appreciation for learning the arts in a short essay.

The deadline to submit the dance scholarship essay is May 17, 2010.

Full details on how to apply are available at Pam’s Academy of Dance at 719 Liberty St. in Morris and 24805 S. Tryon St. in Channahon, or online at the Web site www.pamsacademyofdance.net.

MLB preview: Kansas City Royals

The Royals have enough young talent to make them the team most likely to stop the Tigers from ruling the AL Central for the next few years. But they're a year, or more, away.

MLB preview: Detroit Tigers

Even with Prince Fielder, Detroit may have only the sixth-best roster in the American League in my book (maybe the seventh if the Blue Jays really put it together). In the Central, that is plenty to be the favorite.
