War carries a cost too great to bear

Text Size: AaAaAaAaAa

The rain falls silently atop the streets.

A young man pulls open his umbrella to stay dry.

An old woman steps out of her car, after reaching her destination, and looks up toward the sky; the cold rain pelting her face.

A toddler begins to cry in her crib when the thunder begins, and her Mom rushes in to comfort her.

A middle-aged man leaves work and heads home for dinner with his family.

Then without so much of a warning a nuclear bomb strikes the city. A hundred thousand people die and those who live suffer permanent radiation damage.

They suffer for many years until they die of the cancer caused by the radiation left over from the bombing. Could anyone possibly have a rational justification for the attack? Did those hundred thousand innocent citizens deserve what they got? Was it just a small price to pay for freedom? Are the young man, old woman, the toddler and her mother, the middle-aged man and his family free in their graves. Was their small lives insignificant? Why didn’t they get a choice? Why? Why?!

There is no answer. There is no excuse. The only thing you have to gain in was...is death. Maybe not you and maybe not anyone you know. But does that make it okay?

We, as citizens of the world, need to ask ourselves these questions and not just me or you, but every person. War may be a solution to our problems, but does the ends justify the means?

MLB preview: Kansas City Royals

The Royals have enough young talent to make them the team most likely to stop the Tigers from ruling the AL Central for the next few years. But they're a year, or more, away.

MLB preview: Detroit Tigers

Even with Prince Fielder, Detroit may have only the sixth-best roster in the American League in my book (maybe the seventh if the Blue Jays really put it together). In the Central, that is plenty to be the favorite.
