Area Roundup: Morris swimmers lose in DeKalb

In area action in recent days, the Minooka boys golf team captured a Southwest Prairie Conference win, the Morris freshman football team beat Streator and the Coal City soccer squad defeated Sandwich. In a dual swim meet held in DeKalb, Morris finished behind the Barbs by a 103.5-66.5 score at the varsity level. In JV action, Morris won 121-21.

Morris was able to generate four second and four thirds in the event.

Britt Crawford was second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:21.28 and second in the 50 free with a time of :25.63 and Diane Ashley was second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:11.14 and second in the 100 freestyle in 1:00.64.

Aimee Nugent was third in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:27.82; Heather Lamb was third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:46.29; Lydia Abraham was third in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:20.63 and third in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:25.95.

The JV team garnered first in every event including: Mary Kate Messing in the 200 free (3:04.44); Arielle Piper in the 200 IM (3:12.84); Kirsten Olson in the 50 free (:31.5); Kelly Kolotka in the 100 butterfly (1:32.47); Bree Pena in the 100 free (1:15.57); Harmony Alford in the 500 freestyle (7:57.03); Piper in the 100 backstroke (1:27.30) and Jana Berryman in the 100 back (1:36.54).

In a dual at Heritage Bluffs, the Indians scored a 10-stroke victory over the Wolves behind medalist honors by Alex Walter. Walter fired a round of 37 on the day.

Both Jason Chobar and David Gregory each shot a 41 and Mike Naszkiewicz ended with a 43.

Also golfing for Minooka but not scoring were: Tommy Uraski (44), Carson Neushwander (45), Jordan Smith (46) and Dan Zych (49).

FRESHMAN FOOTBALL

Streator 13

The Redskins played Monday night under the lights and came away with an 8-point win against the Bulldogs.

Cody Decker had a pair of touchdowns and also kicked three extra-points on the night. Ben Hart added a TD.

Decker also intercepted a pass that solidified the win late in the contest with Streator driving.

Triston Layne had a pair of sacks on defense and Cody Mitchell also added a sack.

In the 'B' game, John West scored the lone TD in a 6-0 win for Morris.

GIRLS TENNIS

Morris 2

Shorthanded due to illness, Morris fell to the Falcons.

At No. 1 singles, Mackenzie Kelly lost 8-1 and at No. 2 singles Sara Sapsford lost 8-6.

In doubles action, the No. 1 Morris team of Alex Granger and Rachel Resler won 8-6, the No. 2 doubles team of Morgan Narvick and Kelsey Wagner won 9-7 and at No. 3 doubles, the Morris team of Selma Dzelil and Ali Menozi lost 10-8.

"This was a very close match which could have gone either way. We were missing two regulars in Michelle Lutz and Caitlin Kitchell who were out of school because they were sick," Morris coach Luke Windy said. "However, Sara and Ali both did a tremendous job of filling in. Sara lost a tough singles match and Ali and her partner lost a tough doubles match."

At No. 1 singles, Lutz lost 6-0, 6-0 and at No. 2 singles Mackenzie Kelly lost 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles action, the No. 1 team of Granger and Resler lost 6-4, 6-2, the No. 2 doubles team of Narvick and Wagner lost 6-3, 6-3 and at No. 3 doubles, Dzelil and Kitchell lost 6-4, 6-2.

Morris is now 1-6 on the season and 1-3 in the NIB12 East.

BOYS SOCCER

Sandwich 2

Zack Bretz had 7 saves while Cody Chandler, Tony Norris and Zack Pierard added goals in the Interstate Eight Conference win by the Coalers.

Chandler's goal came on a penalty kick and Tony Norris tied the game at 2-2 at the end of the first half.

In the second half, Pierard scored with an assist from Jerimiah Abbott.

Coal City is 4-2 in the I-8 this season.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Newark def. Indian Creek

Newark improved to 10-6 with the win.

Katie Larson had 5 kills and 3 aces for the Norsettes while Miranda Schmidt added 14 assists and 5 kills. Additionally, Mariah Michaelson had 7 kills; Abbey Akre 4 kills; Ashley Edwards 11 digs; Taylor Krug 5 kills; Lauren Tollefson 11 assists and 7 points and Sammi Eddy 11 digs and 3 aces.

GRADE SCHOOL BASEBALL

Gardner-South Wilmington 15,

Saratoga 11

In the first round of the IESA Regional action, GSW won by four runs.

For the Hawks, Thomas Cheshareck and Dalton Onsen shared the pitching duties while at the plate, Logan Ault had two walks and a run scored.

Also offensively for Saratoga, Cheshareck had 3 singles and a home run while adding 2 stolen bases and 3 RBI; Kris Eliakis had 3 walks, a sacrifice bunt and 3 runs scored; Onsen had a single, 3 walks and a run scored; Dylan Podhajsky 2 singles and 3 RBI; Domenico Pogliano and Anthony Sams each walked; Jon Sherlock had 2 singles, a walk, a stolen base, an RBI and 3 runs scored and A.J. Vota was hit by a pitched ball, drew 2 walks and had a run scored.

The Hawks end the season at 2-12.

GRADE SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Streator Northlawn 22,

Seneca 17

Morgan Maloney and Savannah Greenwall each scored 6 points apiece in the loss for the Lady Raiders. Kassidy Maierhoffer and Kendall Carajohn had 2 points each and Sam Groth added a point.

In the seventh grade contest, Kaylyn Groth had 5 points in the 19-11 win over Northlawn. Emma Bedeker and Olivia Taylor had 4 points each while Karlie Cade, Sierrah Kinney and Claudia Paulsen had 2 points each.
