Tell county board to say no to local pig farm

3245 W. Southmor Road, Morris could change the landscape of our county as the new owner of this property intends to build and operate a hog confinement (pig farm) reported at an estimated 1,000 swine.

The established rural neighborhood exhibits pride in property and home ownership and most are “spend the rest of our lives in” homes where fields of soybeans, corn, hay and, occasionally, grazing cattle and horses dot the landscape. A map amendment has been submitted to rezone the property from agricultural/residential to agricultural so that a hog confinement can be placed in the mist of a community of homes. When the land was purchased to build these homes, it was under the premise that having the properties zoned agricultural/residential would protect not only their investment but their dreams.

Located across the Illinois River from this property, Hatcher’s Woods, Nettle Creek and the City of Morris, with the prevailing southwesterly winds, will not escape the characteristics known to be associated with hog confinements (pig farms), with more than our immediate neighborhood being affected. Morris, our county seat, is a very picturesque community with a quality of life that is rare. Others want to live here and visitors and recreation enthusiast abound.

If you do not welcome a hog confinement next to your home, your business, your farm or your county and you wonder about the environmental harmfulness, devaluing of your property, natural resources and altering the quality of your life, please let your Grundy County Board members know.
