WARRENSBURG (MCT) — A student who smoked synthetic marijuana before attending Warrensburg-Latham High School was suffering from symptoms including vomiting, dizziness, possible seizures, incoherence and pains in his lower side.

First responders from the Warrensburg Fire Department and Macon County Sheriff's Office responded to the call for assistance on Thursday.

Sheriff Thomas Schneider said this was the first medical emergency call to a school in Macon County as a result of problems called by synthetic marijuana.

While it is legal to sell it in stores, synthetic marijuana is marked as "not for human consumption," Schneider said.

There have been other cases of young people becoming ill as a result of smoking synthetic marijuana in Macon County. There has been at least one death in Illinois caused by smoking synthetic marijuana.

Schneider said he wants the public to know that the substances may jeopardize the lives of young people, who are led to believe that they are safe because they may be obtained legally.
