Alabama blows out LSU, wins national championship

There are arguments aplenty on Twitter right now about why last night's BCS National Championship game had such lousy ratings.

I watched — most of it, anyway — but the reason I was basically tuned out by the third quarter had nothing to do with the matchup, or the lack or a playoff, or Brent Musburger's "Honey Badger" fetish. It had everything to do with the game being excruciating to watch.

I appreciate great defense, and I don't need scoring to be entertained and/or engaged in a football game. Heck, when LSU edged Alabama 9-6 during the regular season, I watched, intently, from start to finish. It wasn't perfectly played football by any means, but it was a clinich of great defense by both teams, and it was very exciting.

Last night's 21-0 Alabama win over the Tigers was anything but exciting. If the teams had been competitive with one another, my disdain with the BCS and my being sick of the SEC wouldn't have stopped me from loving every minute of it. When Alabama outgained LSU 384-92 and the Tigers couldn't even cross midfield, I couldn't wait for the game to get over so I could go to bed.

There's no doubt that a playoff system would generate more excitement for the national championship than what we have under the unpopular BCS. The ratings would be better than what they were last night. But a playoff wouldn't necessarily prevent conference rivals from advancing to the title game, nor would it ensure a better game than the dog we got this season.

Yes. It's an opportunity to raise needed funds.
No. This sort of activity should be kept out of the community.
I'm undecided on this issue.
