A 17-year-old Braidwood resident has been charged with multiple counts of aggravated battery for attempting to injure two officers.

A court complaint was filed against Tyler T. Bumgardner leading to his arrest for two counts of aggravated battery, Class 2 felonies, threatening a public official, a Class 3 felony, and two counts of criminal damage to property, Class 4 felonies.

On Monday, Jan. 16, Bumgardner allegedly kicked one Coal City officer in the shins and spit on another, and threatened the life of the second officer. He threatened to "take the gun and shoot him and then he was going to shoot (the officer's) family," according to the case file.

During his arrest, Bumgardner allegedly damaged a squad car and the walls of the Coal City Police Department booking room.

I've never met the young Mr. Bumgarner of Braidwood, but it sounds as though nobody ever taught him respect for authority (and made it stick), nor any anger management skills, both of which would help tremendously in how to get along in this world. I was born along with the dinosaurs of course, but was taught to respect authority, and if authority was wrong, change it non-violently through legal channels. How are we ever going to have a society or community of responsible adults if we never hold anyone accountable for their crimes and misdemeanors? Short answer: we won't.
