Kayla Bachar aspires to study music at Julliard in New York City and play the flute in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Her chances of making her dreams a reality are looking better and better all the time.
The Minooka Community High School junior is one of a small, select group of flautists who auditioned and were selected to play with the Illinois Music Education Association’s District I Band at Downers Grove High School in November. Bachar was placed in the fifth chair, beating out more than 130 other flautists from the Chicago area.
Bachar was selected to play with IMEA District 1 Band last year as a sophomore as well. She was just the fourth flautist in the history of MCHS to be accomplished enough to receive that honor.
She was also chosen to rehearse and play with the IMEA All-State Band. Next week Bachar will travel to Peoria to rehearse for three days and participate in a performance with the band on Jan. 28.
“Selection to the All-State Band as a junior is a great accomplishment,” said MCHS assistant band director Gina Wych.
“Kayla works hard and takes music very seriously, so to see her find success at this level is wonderful.”
In Peoria, rehearsals start at 6 a.m. and run as late as 10 p.m. Students from all over Illinois work together to create a concert in just two days, Wych said.
Bachar began playing flute in the fifth grade and found she was not only skilled at it, it was something she loved doing.
“I like how it sounds,” she said. “I think it’s really pretty and I like to make nice sounds out of it.”
With her talent and love of the instrument, it seems a natural progression for Bachar to study at a prestigious school such as Julliard and some day hold a chair in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
The Orchestra is Bachar’s ultimate goal, but she knows it could take years before a spot even becomes available. In the meantime, she intends to teach what she loves. She plans to major in music performance and minor in education.
“It takes a long time to get into (the orchestra), so while I’m waiting I want to teach music,” she said.
When she’s not practicing flute in the classroom or participating in the MCHS marching band, Bachar can be found honing her skills with private music coach Anna Mudroch.
Mudroch is the assistant band director at Lockport Township High School in addition to giving private lessons.
The addition of private lessons is important in preparing Bachar for a school like Julliard.
“We are going to prepare her for Julliard and a lot of other places,” said Mudroch. “I definitely see her (there); she’s got huge potential in the area of performance.”
A year from now Bachar will be auditioning for those schools. Auditions take place January through March of a student’s senior year.
But next week’s practice and performance with the All-State Band still looms large in the picture and Bachar is excited and honored to have been chosen.
“I believe it’s such a huge honor, not many people get chosen,” she said. “I have been practicing so long, I am glad to be able to make it in.”
