SUV collides with car after traveling 5 miles the wrong way on Stevenson
(MCT) — An SUV traveled five miles the wrong way on the outbound Stevenson Expressway and crashed head-on with a small car on a ramp to Lake Shore Drive early Friday morning, seriously injuring both drivers, authorities say.
The 23-year-old driver of the SUV was placed in police custody at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and alcohol-related charges and other citations were pending against him, police said.
The driver of the Toyota, a 24-year-old woman, was also taken to Northwestern. Both drivers were transported in serious-to-critical condition but their injuries were not considered life-threatening, police said. Neither car was carrying passengers.
State police first started receiving calls about 3:05 a.m. reporting an SUV traveling inbound on the outbound Stevenson near Kedzie, police said.
The crash occurred on a connecting ramp to Lake Shore Drive. The ramp was closed while the two vehicles were removed.
