Man charged with shooting at cops: 'I didn't know y'all was the police'

(MCT) — Jenkins Cooper is being held without bail after allegedly opening fire on law enforcement officers when five Chicago police officers and one FBI agent entered his home, officials said.

Cooper, 40, was arrested after the incident which occurred in the 7300 block of South Wood Street as investigators were there to  serve a warrant at about 1 p.m., Friday, prosecutors said in bond court.

Cooper fired four shots from the basement “narrowly missing” the FBI agent at the top of the stairs, according to prosecutors and police reports. Moments later, Cooper appeared in the doorway with his hands in the air.

“I didn’t know y’all was the police. I wouldn’t have shot,” Cooper told officers while being handcuffed, according to police reports.

He faces five felony counts of attempted murder and five counts of aggravated discharge of a fire arm.

According to prosecutors, Cooper has six prior felony convictions, including attempted murder of a police officer in 1995. He was sentenced to 12 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the crime.

His next court date is Feb. 6.
