Each year, the Alida C. Bliss Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors an essay contest with a different theme.

This year’s theme is the War of 1812.  Students were asked to pick a hero from that war and explain the deed that made him/her a hero. They were to write from the perspective of a friend of that hero. The annual contest is open to any fifth- through eighth- grade student in Grundy County.

This year’s Chapter winner is I.C.S. eighth grader Emma Dingbaum. Emma was presented with a certificate, a stamp, and a cash prize. Her essay advanced to the District competition.

I.C.S. seventh-grader Megan Davy earned an honorable mention for her essay. She was presented with a certificate and a stamp. Veronica Johnson received a participation award and a stamp.

The students were honored at an assembly that took place at I.C.S. Awards were presented by D.A.R. members Mary Ann Sanford and Lea Sharp.
