A man fell through the ice while playing hockey on a pond in north suburban McHenry Township and died hours after rescuers pulled him out of the water, authorities said.

The 40-year-old man had been playing with his son on the frozen pond behind his home in the 3700 block of Windmere Lane in Johnsburg when he fell through the ice at about 6:15 p.m. Sunday, according to McHenry Township fire officials.

Temperatures were about 29 degrees -- just three degrees below freezing -- at the time of the accident.

Fire department divers searched for about 32 minutes before they located the man beneath the ice.

The man, whose identity was being withheld, was airlifted to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was later pronounced dead, officials said.
