CHANNAHON — Channahon police are investigating the theft of 40,000 pounds of aluminum.

A semitruck and flatbed trailer, which was filled with the 40,000 pounds of extruded aluminum, were taken between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19 near the 24000 block of Municipal Dr. in Channahon.

"The driver stopped to take a break and left the vehicle," Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold said.

The aluminum was covered by a black tarp and was on its way to Chicago from Tennessee, Wold said. The truck was recovered by Elmhurst police at 5:50 a.m. Monday morning, but without the aluminum. The truck was returned to the owner after being processed for evidence.

In talking with other local authorities and the truck's insurance company, there have been no similar thefts in the area.

"It was a crime of opportunity," Wold said, adding the thief or thieves may have been going for just the truck at first not knowing what was in it because of the tarp.

Channahon police and the Illinois State Police Cargo Task Force are investigating the incident.
