3rd teen charged in rape near theater

(MCT) — A third teen was charged as an adult in connection with the rape of a young Highland Park woman who became separated from friends last New Year's Eve outside a theater on Chicago’s Northwest Side, Cook County prosecutors said today.

Prosecutors said Charles Chuning helped carry the drunken 18-year-old victim to a more isolated residential street near the Congress Theater and looked on as co-defendant Terrance Ford sexually assaulted her.

Chuning, 16, of Chicago was charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault, robbery and kidnapping and was ordered held in lieu of $750,000 bond by Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil on Wednesday.

Ford, 15, and Aanwar Barbour, 16, were charged last week in the rape.

Prosecutors said it was Chuning’s idea to take the woman to the more secluded location after a passerby confronted Ford and Barbour about fondling the obviously inebriated victim up against a fence at the busy intersection near the theater in the Logan Square neighborhood.

The three took turns then carrying the woman, prosecutors alleged. At one point, when Chuning realized the woman was bleeding on him after she had fallen and cut her head, he dumped her in a bush, prosecutors said.
