Saratoga officials opt out of RTTT opportunity

District would have only received less than $5,000 over four years

The staff at Saratoga Community Consolidated School District 60C has decided their allocation for the U.S. Department of Education's Race to the Top (RTTT) program was not worth the extra responsibilities the grant would have required.

Gov. Pat Quinn announced in December 2011 that Illinois earned $42.8 million through the RTTT program "to help bolster Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) education across the state and other work to close the achievement gap," according to isbe.net/racetothetop.

The Illinois State Board of Education will use half of its grant to fulfill its own responsibilities, but the other half, $21.4 million, will be divided among the local school districts interested in participating.
