Blacks, Operation St. Nick put wheels on the street

Now in its 10th year, program has given bikes to 500 children

In 2003, Augie and Marie Black started a tradition with Operation St. Nick.

That tradition, this year, marks its 10th anniversary, and has resulted in a total of 500 local children having new bicycles to ride.

The Blacks began the tradition that first year by donating $5,000 to Operation St. Nick and simply asking the organization to find children in Grundy County who didn't have a bike because of financial burdens on the family. The organization was told to see to it that 50 or so children received new bikes in time for the Memorial Day weekend.

What is your stance on a proposed 1 percent sales tax to fund local school building projects?

I'm in favor of anything that will help improve school finances
I will support it if it helps to lower my property taxes
I oppose it because I don't believe it will impact property taxes and I will just pay twice
I'm against any additional taxes
I have not heard enough yet to form an opinion
