Coal City, Carbon Hill bus tour is June 20
COAL CITY — On Wednesday, June 20, the Coal City Public Library District and the Carbon Hill School Museum will sponsor a narrated bus tour through Coal City and Carbon Hill.
The fourth annual tour, entitled “Old Coal City and Carbon Hill,” will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the library. Michelle Micetich will discuss the histories of important buildings, standing and gone, as well as prominent and interesting homes. Participants will learn the origins of the place through all its uses over time. The last stop will be Carbon Hill School Museum for sharing old photos, stories and a snack.
The Carbon Hill School Museum is the home of the Carbon Hill Historical Society. It is located at 875 North Second St. in Carbon Hill, and Micetich is the curator. The original 1893 schoolhouse displays hundreds of original artifacts depicting immigrant turn-of-the-century life of families, businesses, and coal mines.
Original items include the jailhouse iron doors, soccer trophies and bocce balls, coal mining tools, furniture and household items, old store supplies, Illinois coal reports, maps and plats.
