Coleman catches break with broken bat

(MCT) — Cubs pitcher Casey Coleman barely escaped what could have been a serious injury Wednesday night when he was hit in the right hand by a broken bat.

A pitch to Eduardo Escobar in the seventh inning resulted in the barrel of the bat hitting him, leading to his exit from the game.

"I didn't see it until it actually hit me," Coleman said. "It's always scary when something like that comes (at you), but I got lucky. It was just the barrel that hit me in the knuckles. It's scary when you don't see it and all of a sudden it gets you."
