'Hi, grandma, I'm in trouble'

Citizens warned to avoid grandchildren scams

MORRIS — Morris Police are warning citizens to be on their guard against a phone scam that tugs at both the heart and the wallet.

According to Deputy Chief Harvey Van Cleave, in recent weeks, locals have reported receiving "Grandchildren Scam" calls, where a caller claiming to be the person's grandchild or a police officer or attorney requests that the person wire money or give bank account information to help a grandchild in trouble in another state or country.

"We have had no one call and claim to be a victim of the crime, but we've had several people want to pass on the information so it doesn't happen to someone else," Van Cleave said.
