Posing steps down as GSW baseball coach

The Gardner-South Wilmington Panthers resembled the Bad News Bears more than the New York Yankees when Jon Posing became their head baseball coach prior to the 2006 season.

"My first year, we had $8.95 in the baseball account," Posing said. "We had no usable pitching machines. The catcher's equipment was duct taped — the shin guards were duct taped together. Our batting helmets were something else. They were brushed with orange paint with black paw prints on the side of them."

Posing began selling advertising space on the outfield wall of the baseball field, located right behind GSW High School, which he says brought in "four or five thousand" dollars for the program annually. The money eventually allowed for a new fence, new dugouts, new uniforms and even an improved field, thanks to regular fertilizing.
