Drought cancels Plainfield fireworks display

(MCT) — Plainfield has canceled this year’s Independence Day fireworks because a lack of rain has left Renwick Park’s lawns dangerously dry, park district spokeswoman Marianne Ryan announced Thursday.

With five days to go until the July 3 display and little rain in the forecast,  park district and fire department officials worried that the fireworks display or debris from falling shells might ignite the grass in the park or surrounding subdivisions, Ryan said.
