Slammers' Nieves to participate in Home Run Derby

Abel Nieves is not only representing the Joliet Slammers in the 2012 All-Star Game, he will also look to win the State Farm Home Run Derby on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Nieves is the Slammers’ representative in the derby as he has the most home runs among the three Slammers chosen to the All-Star Game. The other two selections are RHP Amalio Diaz and INF Hector Pellot, who has two home runs. Nieves’ four home runs are tied with Erik Lis for the most on the Slammers.

Nieves has become a fan favorite at the yard. Fans have become accustomed to “Hell’s Bells” playing in the stadium every time Abel gets a hit. He’s gotten a lot of hits in 2012 as Nieves leads the Slammers in batting average (.356), hits (57), OBP (.451) and SLG (.506).
