I have heard many people say that they use agave nectar as a healthier alternative to sugar. Here’s the facts about agave nectar:
- It is composed of fructose and glucose
- It may have a lower glycemic index and glycemic load than regular table sugar
- Inulin fiber makes up about half the carb content in a serving of agave nectar
- Agave nectar is sweeter than regular sugar which may mean you would use less
- A vegan alternative to using honey
- There is slightly less calories and carbs in 1 tablespoon of sugar compared to agave nectar
- The fructose/glucose content of agave nectar may vary depending on the brand
- It dissolves quickly and can be used to sweeten cold beverages
- Light, medium, and dark-colored agave nectar have different uses
So the moral of the story is…
There are still calories and carbohydrate in agave nectar so it is not a “free” substitute for regular table sugar. However, because of the sweetness and composition of agave nectar, it may be an alternative for someone who is trying to improve their post-meal blood sugar levels.
Whether you decide to use agave nectar or sugar, try to use as little as possible.
