Quinn faces uphill fight for assault weapons ban

(MCT) — Gov. Pat Quinn launched a new bid Tuesday to ban assault weapons in Illinois in the aftermath of the shooting rampage in a Colorado movie theater, but he will have to overcome the fervent opposition that has stymied attempts to pass such a ban for decades.

At a downtown Chicago news conference, the governor also proposed a ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines, another thorny gun control issue that has been pushed to the forefront by the Colorado shootings that killed 12 and wounded dozens on July 20.
