New school employees are introduced to District 1

COAL CITY — In an effort to better understand their new district and students, a group of new Coal City Community Unit District #1 employees boarded a bus to get the lay of the land Monday morning.

The tour was part of the district's annual New Teacher Orientation, a three-day program for new district employees. This year, the district initiated a group of 14 employees, which was made up of 11 teachers, a school psychologist, a reading specialist and a social worker.

District Superintendent Dr. Kent Bugg said Monday's tour was a chance to show the geographical area of the district, as well as point out some of the district's biggest taxpayers, like Exelon's Dresden Generating Station.

What is your stance on a proposed 1 percent sales tax to fund local school building projects?

I'm in favor of anything that will help improve school finances
I will support it if it helps to lower my property taxes
I oppose it because I don't believe it will impact property taxes and I will just pay twice
I'm against any additional taxes
I have not heard enough yet to form an opinion
