Punjab leader receives somber welcome in US in wake of temple shootings
CHICAGO (MCT) — Many Indians planned to greet Punjab’s chief minister with music and banners as he arrived Tuesday at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport — but that quickly changed following this week’s fatal shootings inside a Milwaukee-area Sikh temple. Instead, a somber crowd welcomed the leader with comforting hugs and handshakes.
“Everybody is in a gloomy mood,” said Lakhwant Singh Komal, 65, of Skokie, Ill., before Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s arrival. “We’re trying to be positive.”
