White Sox’ Dunn isn’t hooked on the future

TORONTO (MCT) — Adam Dunn maintains reaching 400 home runs isn’t that big of a deal to him.

Home runs hitters, if they play long enough, should get to 400. Forty-nine already have.

But what about 500, a plateau only 25 hitters have reached?

“That’s a lot,” said Dunn, who hit his 399th Wednesday night. “When you’re talking that number, that’s a good one.”

Will Dunn play long enough to get that many?

“I’m 32, I’m not 38,” he said. “I can’t predict what’s going to happen. I can’t predict last year (which was bad). I can’t predict just kind of a normal year.

“If I stay healthy, I’m going to play as long as I can and as long as I’m having fun. I don’t know if it’s going to be tomorrow, or if it’s going to be 10 more years.”

What about 600?

“When (former Reds teammate) Junior (Griffey) hit his 600th, they printed out a sheet,” he said. “To see the 600 people’s names, when you do it like that, it’s ridiculous. It’s stupid. It’s being healthy and consistent for a long time.”

Once he neared 400 homers, Dunn was greeted with a U.S. Cellular Field sign in the right field bullpen that read: “Get ‘R Dunn: 396.”

“That was pretty creative. I liked that one,” he said.

Still a go: Paul Konerko is expected to return Friday in Kansas City following a seven-day stint on the disabled list with a concussion.

“He’ll come (to the ballpark) early and do some stuff,” manager Robin Ventura said. “We’ll go from there. It looks like he’ll be able to play.”

More rest: Gordon Beckham was out of the starting lineup for a second straight day, although he did play 31/2 innings late in Wednesday’s game, with Ventura saying “he just looks tired.”

“It’s that time of year when you need a little break,” he said. “It’s a long year. It’s one of those you can’t really see the end yet.”

Happy Harold: When Omar Vizquel singled for the Blue Jays in Wednesday’s game, he tied Harold Baines, his former Sox coach, for 43rd all-time with 2,866 hits.
