Cubs backing off on Vitters
CHICAGO (MCT) — Brett Jackson and Josh Vitters were brought up from Triple-A Iowa on Aug. 5 so the Cubs could get a long look at the former first-round draft picks.
Both have struggled, but Vitters’ inability to adjust to major league pitching has earned him a seat on the bench.
Manager Dale Sveum said Thursday that he will play Luis Valbuena more at third base in the final five weeks of the season. Valbuena is hitting .232 with a .319 on-base percentage in 185 at-bats, while Vitters is at .093 with a .123 OBP and 19 strikeouts in 54 at-bats.
