Defense lawyer charged in murder plot will face single racketeering trial
HACKENSACK, N.J. (MCT) — More than three years after Paul W. Bergrin’s arrest, federal prosecutors got the green light on Wednesday to present in a single trial their entire racketeering case against the prominent defense lawyer accused of plotting with drug dealers to murder government witnesses.
U.S. District Judge Dennis M. Cavanaugh ruled that prosecutors can try Bergrin on 26 counts that allege he conspired to commit acts of murder, witness tampering, cocaine trafficking, traveling in aid of a racketeering enterprise, bribery, prostitution and money-laundering.
