Smith defends Cutler, shrugs off criticism

CHICAGO (MCT) — Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith voiced support Monday for Jay Cutler in the aftermath of the sideline confrontation between his quarterback and offensive lineman J'Marcus Webb during last Thursday's loss at Green Bay.

Smith was asked if he would prefer Cutler to be fiery with his teammates -- as he was with Webb -- or be more of a calm leader on the field.

"It’s pretty simple: I like Jay Cutler and everything that he is," Smith said. "And I am not trying to trade any of our players. The week before, you didn’t hear an awful lot of this stuff. We were talking about how good we were and how we were playing. So, we’ll get back to that where the focus is on the play on the football field.
