Treasurer speaking out against plans to shutter Dwight, Tamms prisons
There are just over 49,000 inmates in the Illinois prison system, according to an analysis done by the Associated Press. The system was only built to house about 34,000.
"The prison population today is already at about 143 percent of capacity," said Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford.
Because of these numbers, Rutherford is speaking out against Governor Pat Quinn's proposal to close the state prisons in Dwight and Tamms, along with three halfway houses.
