According to Coal City Police Department records, at about 3:40 a.m., police received a call from a resident on the 400 block of N. Garfield Street. The resident reported hearing someone attempted to enter the residence.

Two officers responded to the scene and found a ripped screen window on the ground and a screwdriver, hammer and a flashlight nearby.

Police found the suspect, Kyle T. Kappeler, 21, of Coal City, in a shed in the homeowner’s backyard, where he was arrested on charges of burglary, a Class 2 felony, criminal damage to property and criminal trespassing to real property.

Officers also found that Kappeler had change, lighters and cigarettes on his person that they believe he took from nearby unlocked vehicles.
