Hester gets his wish — big part in Bears’ offense

The Bears receiver voiced his displeasure about his touches before Monday night’s game against the Cowboys. Offensive coordinator Mike Tice didn’t read about Hester’s displeasure. Instead, Tice heard about it from someone outside the team but close to his heart.

“I guess his daughter told him that I tweeted about it,” Hester said. “But I didn’t tweet it. He kind of joked about it to me and said, ‘My daughter said you want to be more involved in the offense, I hear.’ He knew what I meant.

“He actually told me, ‘You’re going to one of the star players tonight.’ He told me that right before the game.”

Indeed, Hester had a significant role in the Bears’ 34-18 victory. He caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Jay Cutler in the third quarter to give the Bears a little breathing room.

“It was a just a stutter-and-go, post-type thing,” Hester said. “The guy sat down and bit on it, and I took it deep.”

Hester, who entered Monday’s game with just two catches for 27 yards, had three catches for 38 yards. He was targeted four times.

Two of Hester’s catches came on screen passes during the Bears’ initial drive. He gained only 4 yards on those catches, but they were meaningful plays regardless.

“(Tice) was trying to get me involved in the offense,” Hester said. “He was trying to get me going. He told me he understood what I felt. And he told me he was glad to see a player who wants to be involved in the offense.”

Hester has no regrets about speaking out. He didn’t want to hide his feelings. Hester said he did not voice his concerns to Cutler.

“I definitely felt canceled out,” Hester said of the first three games. “Sometimes it was because of the way the game was going. At the same time, I want to be involved regardless of how the game is going.”

Hester also returned two kickoffs for 50 yards Monday night and returned one punt for 8 yards.

In terms of his role on offense moving forward, Hester is eager to see how it unfolds.
