Donald F. Watchinski

ESSEX, Ill. — Mr. Donald F. "Ski" Watchinski, 82, of Essex, Ill., passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at his home.

Funeral services will be at the R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes, Ltd., Braidwood Chapel, 401 E. Main St., at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13. Interment with military honors will follow in North Cemetery in Essex. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at the funeral home.

Born Oct. 2, 1930, in Bloomington, Ill., he was a son of the late Walter and Bessie (Dornemann) Watchinski.

Ski retired from the Reed-Custer School District in 1995. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Watchinski was a member of the VFW Post #5422, American Legion Post #0191, and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #208, all in Wilmington, and a former member of the Essex Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed spending time at the Fireman’s Club in Essex and watching the Chicago Cubs and Bears play.

Surviving are his wife, Mary (Kirchner) Watchinski, whom he married May 5, 1957, in Morris, Ill; two daughters, Veronica (David) Sorensen of Essex and Donna (Don) Telford of Dwight, Ill.; five grandchildren, Kenneth (Erin) Sorensen, Brandi Sorensen, Kirk Telford, Jeremy (Dawn) Telford, and Justin Telford; two great-grandchildren, Andie Mathy and Kaylee Mathy; one sister, June (Roger) Moss of Decatur, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were two sisters, Eloise Anderson and Lorraine Byerly; and four brothers, Walter Watchinski Jr., Lawrence Watchinski, Charles Watchinski, and Richard Watchinski in infancy.

Pallbearers will be Glenn Kirchner, Ken Sorensen, Kirk Telford, Jim Lenzie, Larry Kirchner, and Greg Byerly.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Essex Volunteer Fire Department.
