(MCT) — A male walking along Interstate 55 near Plainfield was killed this morning after being struck by a semi-trailer and a car, according to Illinois State Police officials.

The accident happened at 5:22 a.m. on the northbound Stevenson Expressway just north of U.S. Highway 30, police said.

A 2005 Freightliner was traveling northbound when the truck struck the pedestrian who was walking in the right lane, police said.

The pedestrian was then hit a second time by a 1999 Toyota Camry which was driving behind the semi and did not see the person in the road, police said.

Police were investigating to determine why the person was on the expressway. There was no evidence that the pedestrian's vehicle had broken down.

The male's name or age are not immediately available. No charges have been filed.
