(MCT) — Engineers were examining a railroad bridge over the Dan Ryan Expressway this morning amid concerns that a subcontractor may have caused structural damage to the overpass, officials said.
The ramp from the Chicago Skyway to the inbound Ryan has been closed while contractors and officials with the Illinois Department of Transportation inspect the bridge near 65th Street and Wentworth Avenue, officials said.
It was unclear how long the ramp would remain closed.
Two railroad bridges span the expressway in that area. One is used by Metra trains, the other is being demolished as part of the "Englewood Flyover" project, according to Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile.
Workers were cutting into concrete in an early stage of the project and may have cut too far, so they called for an inspection to be safe, she said.
The subcontractor was being "very cautious," Reile said.
Reile said Rock Island traffic likely would not be affected by the inspection, but engineers were dispatched just in case.
The "Englewood Flyover" project is intended to reduce freight rail congestion on the South Side.
