I remember being initially surprised in late July when a media member said he thought the Bears would cut OL Chris Williams if he didn't beat out J'Marcus Webb for the starting left tackle job.
Williams didn't win the job and he didn't get cut in camp, either, but his Bears career lasted for just 46 days after the final roster cuts were announced on Aug. 31. The Bears terminated Williams' contract Tuesday, ending the tenure of the final first-round draft pick made by Jerry Angelo on their roster.
And what a poor pick it was. Sometimes you can't fault executives when they invest heavily in players and those players get hurt. You could very easily fault Angelo when Williams needed back surgery in his first training camp; he'd come covered with injury red flags. You could also fault Angelo for the fact that Williams devloved from a starting tackle, at least in job title, in 2009 to a guard in 2010 to a swing tackle/backup who was inactive for his last two games in 2012.
Williams was a total bust; we knew that long before he lost to the mediocre Webb despite getting about 37 second chances to win the job this summer. It got to where I went from surprised by what that media guy said to being surprised when the Bears opted to give Williams a roster spot, at least temporarily. With T Jonathan Scott having been added in September, they had no use for Williams anymore.
