Living Lands & Waters lets students learn about the river while floating on the river

Morris Community High School's Earth Systems class had a required dress code Wednesday — life vests — since they had class on the Illinois River.

The students "floating classroom" was on the Living Lands & Waters barge. Living Lands & Waters, based out of East Moline, is a non-profit organization that aids in the protection, preservation and restoration of the nation's major rivers and watersheds. In addition, part of its mission is to expand awareness of taking care of the country's waters.

Teacher Jackie Litwiller and her co-teacher, Joanne Engle, attended one of the educator workshops the organization held this summer and thought it would be great for the students.
