Substance discharges from ExxonMobil refinery

Officials say incident poses no danger, not impacting Channahon

CHANNAHON — Gasoline and heavier materials that are part of the crude oil refining process were released from a processing unit at ExxonMobil Joliet Refinery, Interstate 55 and Arsenal Road, Channahon, at about 9 a.m. Friday morning.

Industrial hygienists were immediately deployed to monitor the area, according to a press release from ExxonMobil's Public Affairs Manager Tricia Simpson. No health impacts have been identified.

Because the wind was blowing east Friday morning, none of the materials made their way into Channahon, Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold said. Officers were sent to investigate the roadways in Channahon and nothing was visible on the roads and the pavement was not slippery.

The Will County Sheriff's Department temporarily closed Arsenal Road, from Baseline Road in Elwood to Interstate 55 in Channahon, however, and the Will County Highway Department was sanding that portion of the roadway.

"We are working to help them reopen (Arsenal Road) as quickly as possible," Simpson said.

ExxonMobil will pay for anyone's vehicle to be cleaned if their vehicle was soiled from driving in the area of the refinery at the time of the incident. Those individuals are asked to save their receipts for reimbursement.

Semi-trailers can be washed at A&R Transport, 2223 Empress Road, Joliet. No out-of-pocket payment will be required.

The Public Affairs office is also setting up a toll-free claims number and dedicated personnel to work with people whose vehicles or property were impacted by the discharge. That information will be released when it is given.

For additional information, call (714) 815-4711.

ExxonMobil is very sorry for the inconvenience, Simpson said in the release.
