Pierzynski files for free agency

(MCT) — CHICAGO — Catcher A.J. Pierzynski leads the first batch of White Sox players filing for free agency Monday, and the team is expected to announce soon whether it will give buyouts to pitcher Jake Peavy, third baseman Kevin Youkilis and reliever Brett Myers that will make them free agents.

The buyouts are expected to be a formality, as general manager Rick Hahn said Friday that he has spoken to the representatives for each of the White Sox’s core free agents, adding that he understands their wishes to explore the free-agent market.

The White Sox have exclusive financial negotiating rights with their own free agents through Friday night. Free agents can talk to other teams but cannot negotiate financial terms until Saturday.

The biggest decision could involve pitcher Gavin Floyd, who could become a free agent if the Sox don’t pick up his 2013 option for $9.5 million. If Peavy and Floyd are granted free agency, the Sox would have a rotation consisting of left-handers Chris Sale, Jose Quintana, John Danks and possibly Hector Santiago.

The other Sox players who became free agents Monday were left-hander Francisco Liriano, infielders Orlando Hudson and Jose Lopez, outfielder Dewayne Wise and reliever Brian Bruney.
