Former Rep. Debbie Halvorson announces bid to replace Jackson
(MCT) — Eight months after matching up against Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. in a Democratic primary, former Rep. Debbie Halvorson has announced her candidacy to replace him in a special election.
Jackson, who won both the March primary and the general election in November, announced his resignation Wednesday after months of questions about his health and news of a federal investigation into his use of campaign funds.
Voters will pick his successor in a special election early next year.
Currently a resident of south suburban Crete, Halvorson represented the state's 11th District in Congress from 2009 to 2010. Prior to that, she served 12 years in the Illinois State Senate, including as its Democratic Majority Leader.
Halvorson announced her candidacy in a news release late Sunday.
