Earl S. Allen

COAL CITY — Mr. Earl S. Allen, 89, of Coal City, passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at Joliet Area Community Hospice.

Born Sept. 8, 1923, in Naniamo, British Columbia, Canada, Earl was the son of Margaret (Little) and Thomas Allen. He was an area resident since he was 5 years old.

Earl served his country in World War II as a pPilot in the Army Air Corp. He flew as pilot in command on the C-47, C-54, B-25 and the B-26 through South America, Africa, the Middle East and Europe. His rank at time of discharge was 1st Lt.

Golf was an ongoing passion with Earl. He was a long-time member of the Morris Country Club and served on its board for many years.

Earl was in the insurance business since 1963, opening Earl Allen Insurance Agency, Inc. in 1985. Recently, Earl headed up a committee to upgrade and preserve the Veterans Monument located outside of the Coal City Intermediate School. He was extremely proud as well as grateful to all on the committee and to those who donated their time and/or money to that endeavor.

Survivors include his daughter, Margaret (Gary) Peck; his son, Stephen (Hope) Allen; four grandchildren, Carrie Reichert, Frank (Jenny) Niemi, Ryan (Sally) Allen and Lori (Jonathan) Mata; as well as six great-grandchildren, Joe, Sam and Jack Reichert, Rebecca and Andrew Niemi and Alaina Mata.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Ruth Allen; his parents, Margaret and Thomas Allen; and three brothers, Thomas, Glenn and Hugh Allen.

Per Earl's wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. There will be no wake or funeral services.

A private memorial service will be held for the immediate family at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.

Memorial contributions to the Joliet Area Community Hospice, 250 Water Stone Circle, Joliet, IL, 60431, would be appreciated by the family.
