CHANNAHON — The Channahon Fire Protection District was called upon Sunday afternoon to extinguish a fire in a one-story home.

No injuries to firefighters resulted from the fire at 23833 Cottonwood Lane, Minooka, which was reported at 3:45 p.m. Sunday. There were two occupants at home during the time of the fire and both were able to evacuate the residence. One occupant was evaluated at the scene for possible smoke inhalation, but refused medical treatment.

According to a press release issued by Chief John Petrakis of the Channahon Fire Protection District, in which the home is located, the residence is owned and occupied by Jerry and Kathy Kline.

When fire crews first arrived on the scene, according to the press release, smoke was obvious at the rear of the residence and coming from the roof the building. Fire crews gained access to the north side of the residence and reported they were accessing an attic fire at the east section of the residence’s interior, near the fireplace.

Interior fire crews reported smoky conditions on the first floor, and fire and smoke in the attic space. Interior search crews broke holes into the attic space in various places in the interior to check for fire extension. Fire and heat were found throughout the attic.

A single hose line was used to bring the fire under control, which was achieved at approximately 4:30 p.m. The fire was determined to be extinguished at approximately 5 p.m.

Fire and water damage was obvious throughout the family room area resulting from the fire attack in the attic space and adjacent wall spaces. Fire crews did utilize salvage covers to protect much the homeowner’s furniture and belongings, but smoke and water damage was still evident within other areas of the home and to all of its contents.

Crews remained on scene for remainder of the incident, conducting thorough inspection of the fire’s suspected area of origin and adjacent rooms and void spaces to ensure the fire had not expanded beyond the suspected area of origin.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined, but appears to be accidental in nature. The estimated damage to the building and its contents is $50,000.

Cottonwood Lane was closed for the duration of the incident. It was re-opened to traffic at approximately 6 p.m., when fire crews left the scene.

Agencies providing assistance during the incident included the Channahon Police Department, which provided traffic control, and ComEd and Nicor, which ensured there were no existing hazards stemming from their utilities as a result of fire damage.
